Let’s begin this post discussing a swimming pool that has chlorine in the water and the pool is operating equipment capable of circulating and filtering on an ongoing basis.  We’ll address the most common causes and the remedy to address the question of How Do I get rid of cloudy pool water.

Potential Cause No. 1 – Did you shock chlorinate recently?

Shock or powder-based chlorine is calcium hypochlorite is the most common type of shock for your swimming pool. This type of shock is considered by the pool pros as highly basic or high on the pH scale. This high pH means it causes cloudiness when introduced to pool water. Basic things are usually cloudy. You might picture cow’s milk (basic, high pH) compared to lemon juice (acidic, low pH).

Waterwise Pool Service Remedy: Call us or consider running your filter continuously to turn over the water and clear it. With a Diatomaceous Earth filter this may only take a few hours since it has the finest level of filtration. A cartridge filter might take 2-5 times as long. Sand filters might take multiple days. A trick for a sand filter is to add a couple of 1lb coffee cup sized scoops of DE powder to them to help them filter a little finer.

Note: With all filters be sure to monitor the pressure and make sure you backwash or clean them if it gets 5-10psi higher than the clean filter pressure for your system. With DE filters we usually shut down a system if we know the pressure has risen above 30psi to avoid damage to the filter internals. Cartridge filters can sometimes be configured to run clean at 30psi. In this case I would strongly suggest cleaning them out before the pressure gets close to 40psi.

2.) Cause #2: Do you have a combined higher than average level of pH, Total Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness?

While each of these chemical items might be within an acceptable range the combination of each of them pushing the high end of their range can mean the water is out of balance. This is even more likely to be a factor if the water temperature is high.  When the combination of these three chemical items and the water temperature is on the high side we have the potential for calcium to precipitate as scale and to make cloudy water.

The index used to describe the relationship of pH, TA, Calcium and Temperature is called the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI).  If the Langelier Saturation Index has a positive reading then the swimming pool water has the potential to scale.

I want to reiterate that you can have each chemical component within an acceptable range and yet if they are all pushing the high side of the acceptable range the combination can be to create water that is pushing calcium out which more easily causes both cloudy water and scale. The good news is you can re-balance your water by adjusting the pH.

As a quick reference here are the ranges we manage towards for swimming pool service in the Dallas, TX area:

Calcium                                                                    200-400 ppm

As a side note we like to keep the pH at or below 7.5 as much as possible. This provides for the chlorine in the pool to be more effective.

Remedy #1: If your pool water is prone to precipitating calcium you can almost immediately achieve balanced water by adding acid to lower the pH to the recommended level per the Langlier Saturation calculator above. Adding acid will also lower the TA slightly.  However if you are compensating for high calcium via pH that has to always be at the low end of the range I would go ahead with Remedy #2.

Remedy #2: If your calcium is above 400ppm I would recommend a partial drain to lower the level. The new water from the tap will have an effective calcium level of almost zero. This means if you do a ½ drain on a pool with a calcium level of 500ppm that you will be reducing the calcium to 250ppm. Once you have added water make sure to rebalance all your chemicals.

3.) Cause #3: Did you have a storm recently?

Storms bring pollen, dust, sand, dirt, leaves etc into the pool very quickly. All this debris will begin to immediately be broken down by the chlorine in the swimming pool water via oxidation. Oxidation turns small particles and debris into a dust or powder that can cause cloudy pool water.

Remedy: (same remedy for cloudy water due to shock) Run your filter to clear your swimming pool water.  DE filters will clear the fastest. Refer to the remedy above for shocking for more details on how long utilizing the filter will take and a trick to make a sand filter clear the pool water faster.

Once fall ends and winter begins to rear it’s ugly head, it will be time to shut your pool down.  When shutting your pool down, the first step will be the water.  You should begin by checking your pH level, and making sure that it is around 7.5.  If it isn’t, simply add some dry acid.  You should also check your chlorine as well, and use a winterizing product to make sure that your pool will be protected from algae during the few months that you won’t be swimming.

During the winter months, you should run your pump for around 6 hours a day, to ensure that the algae doesn’t settle in.  You should also go ahead and check for any types of leaks as well, then switch your skimmer valve off and let the water drain to around 6 inches below the skimmer’s bottom.  This way, you’ll have the preferred amount of water in your pool.

If you are using a summer cover, take it down and give it a good cleaning using fresh water and a pressure washer if you have access to one.  Once you have cleaned the cover really good, go ahead and put it in your building or garage and break out your winter cover.  When you put your winter cover on the pool, make sure that you have plenty of tension on the cover, to prevent anything from getting under it.

Although you may have put the cover on tight, you should still check it every couple of days to make sure that it is still tight.  Remind your family and friends that you have closed your pool down for the winter, and that they shouldn’t be around it.  Pool covers are designed to protect your pool and the water – they aren’t made for safety.  Never, under any circumstances should you let a pet or a person on the cover.

Once you have finished with the cover, it is time for the equipment.  You’ll need to drain the water from your pump, heater, and your filter.  Each one should have a drain plug located somewhere near the bottom, which makes it easy to drain the water out.  You should never forget to do this, as the water can freeze inside of your equipment during the cold months of winter and result in permanent damage of your equipment.

Once you have finished getting your swimming pool ready for winter, you can relax knowing that your pool is protected.  Keeping a check on it every few days will ensure that nothing has happened.  Once summer starts to arrive again, you can get your pool ready for summer and prepare to open it up again.  If you’ve done things right – your pool will be ready to go in no time at all.

But you know that repairing swimming pools requires specialized knowledge in most cases, specialized tools in most cases, and the experience and know-how to do it properly, right?

There was a client (Harry) who decided to install his own brand new swimming pool pump. Brand new, not a refurbished unit. He wanted a brand new one because, since he was going to do the swimming pool repairs himself, he could feel pretty good about spending a few more dollars and getting a brand new pool pump.

So he bought one off the Internet because he just did not have the bones to call us and ask us to sell him one. We would have gladly given him any help he needed, because we do that same job every day.

So his new pool pump arrived about one week after he ordered it. Everything was in order – the pump was new, guaranteed and had full installation documentation included with it. A veritable self-install kit for the novice pool repair man. Or woman. Some women get into DIY projects.

So our swimming pool owner decides that the best thing to do is to position the new pump motor near the old one so he can get a better idea on how to install it. He picks it up carefully because it is quite heavy, and carries it over to the old pump, which is still actually running. On the way over he slips on a child’s ball, loses his balance and drops his new motor on his foot.

That leaves a mark. But his foot is not broken so he takes a breath, grabs his new motor, kicks the ball away and makes it over to his currently running old motor, where he rests his brand new motor on the ground.

Something rattles in his new motor. Not badly, but he us pretty sure that it did not rattle before he dropped it on his now-throbbing foot.

In a hurry because this project started out badly, our money-saver wants to enjoy some early success so he can tell his wife that she was wrong, he ‘could to’ do this himself and that he did not get electrocuted.

Oh yeah! His old motor is still running, and he forgot to disconnect the electricity from the motor. As he gazes at the wires going into his currently running old swimming pool motor,  he remembers that he should flip the main breaker for the swimming pool pump to the “OFF” position before he attempts to remove any electrical wires from it.

So, back up onto his own two feet he goes, wandering around the yard looking for his breaker box. “Oh yes, it is in the garage” he mutters to himself as he walks carefully through the gate. He cannot limp, because his wife will immediately ask him what happened to his foot.

Opening his breaker box reveals a fine array of switches, all in the “on” position, and none of them properly marked. He has no idea which one is the swimming pool switch. His only recourse is to turn all of them off individually until he discovers which one provides power to the pool pump.

Naturally he has to limp through the house every time to see if he lucked onto the pump switch, and on his third attempt, his wife noticed the limp….

Do you see how this is working for our money-saver? Not well, and it gets worse. Sparks actually blew out of his brand new motor when he flipped the breaker “ON” later, and no, the warranty does not cover electrical damage caused by Do-it-yourselfers.
